Excerpt from the book The Paleo Solution by Robb Wolf: "Grain-feeding animals irritates their digestive systems, which creates a Mengele-esque race against time: The animals get so sick from eating graints, it's a race to get them fat enough for slaughter before they die from digestive complications." They have to get grain-fed animals fat before they die of poor health... Something to think about. Post thoughts to comments.

What would you say to the argument of: "I am not a cow. I cannot eat grass like cows can. They cannot eat grains like I can."
ReplyDeleteSincerly,
The Devil's Advocate
That is a really great point. It's true, we probably cannot eat grass, as we find it in the front lawn. We can however, eat green leafy vegetables, which would be our equivalent of grass.
ReplyDeleteThe reason cows cannot eat grains is because grains have a natural defense against being eaten, by cow, human, dog, or otherwise. Grains contain lectins which are not broken down in the digestive system and lead to digestive issues. They also attach to receptors (still undigested) in the gut in order to gain access to our bodies. Finally, once they are brought into the body intact the immune system sees them as foreign invaders and attacks them. This is all independent of species (cow, homo sapien, canine...).
All of this is why eating grains leads to Irritable Bowel... social awkwardness... random illnesses... you see where I'm going with this.
Alright Mr. Physiology. Hear this.
ReplyDeleteLectins are known to play important roles in the immune system, By recognizing carbohydrates that are exclusively on pathogens. One such example is The Mannose-binding Pathway (MBP)or the Mannan-Binding Lectin Pathway (MBL).
MBL: this lectin binds to mannose, glucose, or other sugars with proper positioning of -OH groups. This binding occurs on a number of harmful microorganisms (specifically fungal pathogens). This lectin is also produced by the liver and can initiate compliment cascades by binding pathogens.
So yes, The immune system attacks these lectins. But these lectins are attacked because they are the red flag to the body, saying: "Attack Me! i found something harmful"
So if the grains we eat are infected with harmful microorganisms then yes, we have lectins running wild, and we have poop running wild.
Don't eat infected grains... don't get sick
