This quote attributed to Vince Lombardi has in it several paradoxes and several different ways to be interpreted.
I think of it this way. Everyone has been given a gift to compete. If you don't do your best to make use of the gift, then you spit in the face of the one who gave it to you.
Winning in running doesn't always mean 1st place. While 1st place is great, performing to your best and showing excellence in your running is the real way to win.
I still can't be a Packers fan.
