What distance are you racing? 5k? Great! Why are you bench pressing and rowing instead of running today? Fitness IS fitness, that much is true, but I'm going to kick your ass on the course when it's time to race. Congrats on a new bench max though.
Specificity is what athletes do. Know your race distance, know the course, know your competition, and most importantly, know yourself. Training as a general means of becoming more fit is all well and good, but just doing work does not mean you are going to grow as a runner. As James Fitzgerald says "let athletes grow as athletes" don't train them the same you would a fitness enthusiast. If you want a coach, make sure your coach has integrity, knowledge, and transparency. If you want to crush a 10k, and you're doing the same workout as someone hoping to set a new squat PR, maybe it's time to question what you're doing. If you're an athlete, you're training for a specific purpose, don't let that purpose get lost in the shuffle of just becoming more fit.
Clear your schedule for Wednesday the 13th at 1:30pm CST.
